To accelerate the development of innovative microbiome-based solutions for human health and well-being, the Center for Microbiome Innovation (CMI) at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) is forging a partnership with global consumer health company Haleon.
This partnership will unite CMI’s world-class microbiome expertise with Haleon’s state-of-the-art science and clinical capabilities and global portfolio of trusted, science-led brands across categories that include over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to vitamins, minerals and supplements (VMS). Through applied microbiome research, Haleon seeks to better serve consumer preferences and augment product development to support everyday health with humanity, exploring solutions for enduring consumer needs like healthy aging, cardiovascular health, cognitive health, women’s health and general well-being.
“The microbiome is an important and exciting research area for us,” noted Haleon Future Horizons Global Medical Lead, Simon Rowland, MD. “In addition to the continuous development of our innovative products, we are investing in long-term research enabling us to provide the next generation of personalized nutritional solutions adapted to the individual’s microbiome.”
Together, CMI and Haleon will accelerate microbiome discoveries through joint research programs and access to highly specialized scientific and technological capabilities. The relationship creates an opportunity for younger researchers at CMI, such as PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, to share their nascent findings and gain valuable experience applying scientific knowledge at the scale and pace of industry.
“CMI is thrilled for Haleon to join our network of industry partners supporting the growth and translation of microbiome knowledge. Partnerships like this build upon CMI’s extensive research investigating how diet, nutrition, aging and the environment impact health and wellness, and are crucial to accelerate the application of this field to daily life,” stated CMI Executive Director Andrew Bartko, PhD.
CMI inspires and sustains vibrant collaborations between industry leaders and interdisciplinary teams of UC San Diego researchers to fuel discovery and innovation in the world of microbiome science. The Center encompasses a diverse range of expertise in microbiome sampling, -omics technologies and data analysis, using high-performance computing environments, statistical frameworks and AI methodologies.
